The Animal Ark, Reno, NV

Yesterday, I had the chance to visit The Animal Ark in Reno, NV. If you aren't familiar with what The Animal Ark is, it is a wildlife sanctuary located in the Northwest corner of Reno, Nevada. If you weren't actively looking for The Animal Ark you would probably just drive right on by it. The signs for the ark are not bold and flashy, but if you keep your eyes peeled you will come to a wonderful treat.

The Animal Ark was started in 1982 as a way to help educate children about nature and wild animals that lived in the immediate Reno area. Some of these animals included bears, mountain lions, coyotes, and certain kinds of foxes. After 12 years, The Animal Ark applied for a license to become a wildlife rescue for hurt, sick, or abandoned wild animals, and in 1997 The Animal Ark officially opened it's doors to the public.

Since that day, The Animal Ark has expanded to be able to care for three black bears, three cheetahs, two tigers, a variety of large cats, a multitude of hawks, eagles, flacons, and owls, four species of foxes, and one super awesome desert tortoise named Mr. Peabody.

Without The Animal Ark, many of these animals would have died in the wild or have been euthanized. The Animal Ark gives wild animals with no chance, a second chance. I highly recommend that if you are in the Reno area to stop and give this animal sanctuary a walk through. Plus, there is free tea and cookies. Up close views of beautiful animals, free tea and cookies, now that sounds like a time well spent.
