Guided Reading Lesson: A Lot on Top


Guided Reading Lesson
Early Emergent Level
Background: I conducted this guided reading lesson with a first grade ELD class.
Title: A Lot on Top
Story Introduction
Students talk about the cover of the book (the title or what they see).
Students are asked what they think the story will be about.
Picture Walk
Students quietly look through the pictures and can quietly discuss what they see with the person they are sitting next to.
First Reading
Students and teacher read the story out loud, together.
Remind students to use their reading finger.
First Discussion
Students talk about some of the vocabulary
* Point to the mat.
* What do you use a mat for?
* Point to the mop. 
* What do you use a mop for?
* Point to the pot.
* What do you use a pot for?
Second Reading
Students take turns reading one page of the story
Second Discussion
The teacher will ask questions about the story.
* What is dog on?
* What does the Rabbit put on top of the cat?
* Why does Mom yell when she see a lot on top?
* What happens to all the things Rabbit has stacked up?
Mini Language Lesson/Independent Practice
The teacher asks the students to find the words on, of, said, top, mop and mat.
Students try and find the hiding star.
Discuss with the students what they liked and didn’t like about the story.
